What Is Pet Ultrasound?
Because ultrasound does not use radiation and is generally painless, it is a comfortable diagnostic option for many pets.
How Ultrasound Helps Your Pet
Ultrasound provides valuable information that cannot always be seen through a physical exam alone. This technology allows us to assess organ structure, movement, and function while guiding accurate medical decisions.
Ultrasound may be used to evaluate:
- Liver, kidneys, spleen, and bladder
- Gastrointestinal concerns
- Heart structure and function
- Fluid accumulation or inflammation
- Masses or internal abnormalities
- Pregnancy and reproductive health
By combining ultrasound findings with exams and laboratory testing, we can develop a more complete understanding of your pet’s health.
When Is an Ultrasound Recommended?
Your veterinarian may recommend an ultrasound when additional internal imaging is needed to investigate symptoms or monitor ongoing conditions.
Common reasons include:
- Vomiting or digestive issues
- Unexplained weight loss
- Changes in appetite or energy level
- Abnormal bloodwork results
- Urinary concerns
- Monitoring known medical conditions
Ultrasound helps us diagnose concerns earlier and plan treatment more effectively.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Most ultrasound appointments are simple and stress-free for pets. A small area of fur may be clipped to improve image quality, and a gentle gel is applied to the skin.
During the procedure:
- Your pet is comfortably positioned
- A handheld probe captures live images
- The veterinarian evaluates structures in real time
- Findings are reviewed and discussed with you
Sedation is rarely necessary but may be recommended for pets who are anxious or unable to remain still.
