Domestic Health Certificates
Overview
Are you planning a trip? Your pet may require a domestic health certificate. As a federally accredited veterinarian practice, we can issue your travel health certificates (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) for your healthy cat, dog, or other animal so they may travel with you.
Why would my pet need a certificate to travel?
Obtaining a health certificate indicates that your pet is healthy to travel and does not pose a health risk to people or other pets. Animal health requirements often differ between states, and even methods of travel, such as airplanes that have their own requirements. We recommend checking the following website to see if there is a specific health certificate requirement:
https://www.aphis.usda.gov/pet-travel/state-to-state
When should I start the process?
As requirements differ between airlines and states, we encourage you to contact us as soon as your travel plans are solidified. Certificates must be issued within ten days of the travel. Please also know that a pet must be fully weaned and at least eight weeks of age before traveling; again, we recommend referring to the APHIS website for specific information. This process should be started early to allow time for requirements to be met.
How can I obtain a domestic health certificate?
Start with checking your airline and destination states to see if a travel health certificate is required. If the certificate is required, you pet must pass a health exam and be up to date with their rabies vaccine. Once all requirements are met, a travel certificate will be issued.
International Health Certificates
Traveling abroad or moving internationally can be a stressful experience for both you and your pet and the requirements for the pet change drastically depending on your destination. Any missing documentation or documentation filled out incorrectly could cause your pet to be quarantined or rejected completely. There are some countries that have lengthy requirements as well as waiting periods, so if you know that your pet will be accompanying you for this type of travel, please contact us as soon as possible to initiate the process. A physical exam of your pet, microchip status, vaccine records, and country-specific travel requirements will be performed, reviewed, and discussed. Please visit the USDA APHIS website for travel requirements:
https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel
We will be able to help you with the process and verify the documents, testing, vaccines, and any treatments needed for your pet to be eligible for travel, minimizing and hopefully avoiding quarantine where possible.
